CREW (B): "The dream of dwelling into each others bodies and thoughts is as old as the human brain. For me it started with drawing while I moved within a three dimensional picture. Later, I even caressed the pixels, physically. Now, with CREW, we step into each other's bodies, move, breath, act within them. Could we also swap identities? Can we mediate intimacy? Will theatre allow us to dwell in this amoral zone?" CREW is a Brussels based company that operates on the border between performance art and new technology. Artist Eric Joris uses electronic and digital media as an engine for a unique artistic reflection and praxis. This results in hybrid performances and installations that question and undermine commonly accepted performative parameters. Terra Nova is a theatre performance and immersive adventure offering a multi-sensorial experience to the audience. The spectator, first confronted with the story of R.F. Scott's conquest of the South Pole, will soon be transformed into the protagonist of this adventure... This unusual dramaturgical approach is the result of a skilful adaptation of state-of-the-art immersive technologies to the stage. The theme of the performance is influenced by the latest neurological research on the so-called 'conscience': Who are we? What is the 'self'? Can we trust our body as an interface between reality and the 'self'? Artistic directors Eric Joris and Stef De Paepe and author Peter Verhelst draw a parallel between the exploration of our brains and Scott's dramatic quest to the South Pole. Terra Nova takes us back to R. F. Scott’s dream to be the first man on the South Pole, in 1911. Beaten by only a month by the Norwegian Roald Amundsen, the English explorer and his team perish dramatically on their way back. Unfolding the steps and thoughts of the commander, Peter Verhelst’s text plunges the audience into the debacle of the expedition. But the adventure does not end there. During the performance, each spectator is immersed in other bewildering realities. His senses are stretched beyond limits, his emotions and concentration challenged. Scott’s solitary disarray is echoed by the immersive and transitional experience of the audience, leaving them, in turn, in doubt. And so, the spectator’s own remarkable voyage unveils a universe of the ‘self’, previously unknown to him: his own interior Terra Nova… Terra Nova is a creation of Eric Joris, Peter Verhelst, Stef De Paepe, Robby Cleiren and CREW. Terra Nova is part of a European project on the role of spectatorship in contemporary performing arts, funded by the EU’s Culture Programme. Following the Budapest performances Terra Nova will also be presented Graz, Kortrijk, Brussels, Paris, Rotterdam, Ghent, Zagreb and Prato.
